Occupational therapy
The occupational therapists at our hospital are focused on helping patients relearn and/or regain physical and cognitive abilities that allow them to carry out activities associated with daily living. Some of these activities include bathing, dressing and toileting. Occupational therapy is especially valuable for patients recovering from a stroke or brain injury. People with disorders such as Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis (MS) can also benefit from this therapy, especially in combination with physical therapy.
Each patient will receive a thorough evaluation and dedicated, one-on-one support from an occupational therapist to help maximize patient skills and abilities.
Speech-language therapy
The speech therapists at our hospital work with patients to improve their abilities to speak, listen, read, write, organize and solve problems. Speech therapy is known to be especially effective for patients whose abilities were impaired by a stroke or head injury, as well as patients who experience speech impediments, such as stuttering and sudden hearing loss. It may also benefit patients with a developmental disability or condition, such as cerebral palsy.
Dedicated services are available for patients with swallowing problems, including barium swallow studies to diagnose the cause of a swallowing difficulty and identify the best form of treatment. Speech therapists at our hospital are trained in providing advanced treatment for swallowing disorders. They use electrical stimulation to increase strength and coordination of the swallowing muscles. This form of therapy has proven to be effective in helping patients improve their quality of life and regain the ability to eat and drink normally.
